Drew's Tip Of The Month
Do you stand on the first tee with a lack of confidence and doubt in your mind? Are you worried about where your golf ball is going to land or that everyone is watching you? Do you tell yourself, "don’t hit there"…the sand, water, trees, bushes? If this is you, then you need to get your thoughts moving in the right direction.
The following quote from Larry Nelson, a past U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner, sheds some light on the issue. “Pressure is relative and if you focus on what you are trying to do, there is no pressure. If you’re focusing on the results of what you are trying to do there is a lot of pressure. I learned early on that I had to focus on what I was doing and not the results of what I was doing.”
The legendary golf instructor Harvey Penick always said the most important advice he could give to his students is to “Take Dead Aim”. If your thoughts are not on your target, where are they? Please understand that your brain doesn’t understand the word “don’t”. It replaces “don’t” with “do”. Don’t think of the color blue. You most likely pictured the color blue even if it was just for an instant. If you tell yourself don’t hit it in the water, your brain thinks that you want to hit your ball in the water.
A better question to ask is what is my target, not where don’t I want to hit my golf ball? Also, ask yourself is it possible that I could hit a good shot? The answer is always, “Yes, it is possible!" Ask yourself a better-quality question, and your brain will give you a better-quality answer. The target and the possibility of a good shot should be your only thoughts to the exclusion of everything else. If you can do that, you are playing one shot at a time in the present moment and the results will take care of themselves.
