Drew’s Tip of the Month: "Curve Balls"

Do your shots curve more than you would like? Assuming you are hitting the ball in the center of the clubface, the simple explanation is…the face sends it and the path bends it. The position of the clubface when the ball leaves it will determine approximately 90-95% of the ball’s starting direction. Any curvature to the ball’s flight results from a divergence in the face-path relationship.

If you get the face and path to match up through impact, the ball will fly straight. However, for the right-handed golfer, if the direction of the path is left of the face, the ball will curve right. The greater the divergence between the two, the bigger the slice. The same holds true when the direction of the path through impact is to the right of the club face, the ball will curve left or hook.

If the face and path match up through impact, but the shot is hit on the toe of the club, the ball will trend to hook and conversely shots hit in the heel will tend to slice.

Let’s “Face” it, once you understand why the ball curves the way that it does, you will be on the “Path” to better golf.

Keep Swinging!

—

They Said It

“The only purpose of the golf swing is to move the club through the ball square to the target at maximum speed. How this is done is of no significance at all, so long as the method employed enables it to be done repetitively.”

-John Jacobs, European Ryder Cup Captain, Creator of the European Tour, World Golf Hall of Fame
