Volunteers Needed
If you have the time and would like to make an impact on junior golf and the future of the game, we have many opportunities and are always looking for volunteers. If you have an interest in helping out, please contact PGA Golf Professional Drew Chapman: dchapman@massgolf.org.
Sixty percent or two thirds of golf is played inside fifty yards. It makes sense then to spend two thirds of your practice time working on your putting, chipping and pitching, yet most golfers failto practice these areas of their game that will actually lower their lowest scores. The PGA/LPGA Tour’s best ball strikers on average hit only thirteen greens in regulation. That means that theymiss five green per round, yet their scoring average is always under par. If you work on your short game, especially your chipping, your confidence will improve and so will your scores.
Here are some suggestions to help a right-handed golfer become a better chipper. If you are left-handed, just switch around right and left.
1. Club Selection
Visualize and feel the shot as an underhand toss. Select the club the fits your eye. I recommend a minimum amount of airtime and a maximum amount of ground time. This takes the variable of green firmness out of play and can help a case of nerves as well.
2. Setup
Set up as you would if you were impacting a golf ball on a full swing. When viewed from face on (caddy view), your arms and club form a lowercase “y”, giving you forward shaft lean where the grip of the club is ahead of the clubhead. The forward shaft lean will create a flat left wrist/bent right wrist allowing you to hit slightly down on the golf ball. Set your weight leaningabout 80% to the left at address to further encourage a downward blow.
3. Stroke
Use your body/torso to create a swinging motion of your Arms and Shoulders like a dog wagging its tail or a hitting motion using a bending and straightening Right Arm to move your Left Arm and Golf club…your choice. For both options, your acceleration should be smoooooooth.
4. Mental (Target and Routine)
Find your Target (the hole or your landing spot, again your choice). Picture the target in your mind’s eye. Your eyes are on the ball, but your mind is on your target. Develop a routine where on your last look at your target, you come back to the ball and make your stroke within a secondwhile the target is still fresh in your mind.
Practice different shots. Your brain loves variety and learns better than if you hit the same shot over and over. Keep Swinging and Chipping away at your scores.
Golf Quote of the Month
"Around the green, play the club that keeps the ball nearest to the ground. It’s easier to roll the ball up to the hole than to fly the ball up and stop it by the hole. Putt rather than chip, and chip rather than pitch."
-Billy Casper, Past Masters and U.S. Open Champion
