Drew’s Tip of the Month

"An Uplifting Heeling!"

The purpose of the backswing is to store up power and put the club in the best possible position to start a downswing that provides optimum impact alignments and clubhead speed.

The golfer’s backswing is the blend of two movements: the body or the engine of the swing rotates so the player’s back is to the target at the top of the swing, while the folding of the right arm which can be thought of as the transmission of the swing places the club-shaft over the trail shoulder.  Both movements should occur smoothly and simultaneously around a steady center (head, neck or a point between the shoulders).

A common problem that I often see on the lesson tee is a lack of body pivot or rotation, resulting in a lack of power and an increase in effort on the part of the arms and hands to develop club head speed.  To their detriment, many golfers merely lifted the club up over the trail shouldergiving a false sense of stored energy.

By themselves the shoulder can only rotate 45 degrees. To get the full benefit of a 90-degreeshoulder turn, the other 45 degrees must come from the rotation of the hips. Try this exercise, sit in a chair so your hips can’t move and try to fully rotate your shoulders (back to the target).  They don’t move as far as you might expect. Now stand up in your golf posture and allow your hips to rotate 45 degrees.  Did you get a full 45 degrees each from both your shoulders and hips?If you did, your back would be to the target, and you probably have pretty good flexibility.  Assuming it is feasible, working on your flexibility is always a good idea for better golf.

If you are still not able to make a full backswing turn, here are two ideas to help you. At address, turn both toes slightly outward.  This will give your legs more mobility and allow for a bigger hip turn. If the toes are perpendicular to the line of flight, your ability to turn in either direction will be impeded. Second, allow your lead heel (left heel for right-handed golfers) to be pulled off the ground by the turning hips.  Golfing greats like Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Tom Watson, Bobby Jones, etc. etc. all allowed their lead heel to be pulled off of the ground by the rotation of the shoulders, hips, and knee during the backswing. However, be careful not to purposely lift the lead heel, it must be pulled off the ground to accommodate the bigger backswing turn.

Remember, if you don’t wind up the engine, you can’t unwind it for club head speed. Keep Swinging!
