Regular Closures

Marathon Effort At The Links

On September 16-17, Mike Michel and Chris Carrier once again completed the 24 Hours of Golf Marathon at The Links to benefit the Attleboro Recreation Department golf programs.

This year, however, the format changed to a team competition, pairing eight alumni players each from Attleboro High School, North Attleboro High School and Bishop Feehan High School. Bishop Feehan captured the gross honors, and North Attleboro won the team net prize.

Former Patriots standout Logan Mankins and PGA Tour Player Jim Renner were on hand as special guests. The teams raised more than $15,000, with all of the proceeds going to the promotion of junior golf in the Attleboro Area.

Drew's Tip Of The Month

When it comes to striking the ball accurately, the clubface is “King of the Hill”. The clubface position when the ball leaves it will by and large determine its initial start direction. The relationship of the path of the clubhead to the face will determine if the ball has any curvature to it; for the right-handed golfer, the path to the left of the face will give the ball a slice, the path to the right will create a hook. In other words, the face sends it, and the path bends it.

As I have written in the past, the position and pressure in your left hand has the greatest influence on how the clubface returns to the ball at impact, but the clubface should also be properly aligned to accommodate the left hand at address. All too often, I have seen golfers with decent left-hand grips struggle with their ball striking because of poor clubface alignment at address. This may seem like a minor point, but it isn’t. Because the top edge of an iron is cut on an angle, it is all too easy to use that angle as your reference line to square up the face. This usually results in a clubface that aims well left. The bottom groove or leading edge on the clubface is what you want to use to square the face, making sure that it is positioned at a right angle to your intended start line.

Address the ball as you normally would. Now, raise your arms so that the clubhead is at eye level. Is the leading edge or bottom groove straight up and down, running from six o’clock to twelve o’clock? If it isn’t, adjust accordingly and enjoy straighter shots. Keep Swinging.
